Google Wallet supervised balances launch for US children and teens

Google has introduced US-only supervised Wallet balances for under-18s, with daily limits and tap-to-pay restrictions.

Google Wallet supervised balances are now available to US parents for children and teenagers under 18, Google said on August 6. The product lets a family manager send funds to a child’s Wallet and set a daily spending limit, while restricting use to contactless purchases in stores.

The launch adds a separate, controlled balance to Google’s existing Wallet offering for minors. Google says it is intended to let younger users pay with an NFC-enabled Android phone or Wear OS smartwatch without opening a bank account, while parents retain oversight through Family Link or the Google Wallet website.

How do Google Wallet supervised balances work?

Only the family manager can establish a balance. The child must be under 18, have a supervised Google Account, belong to a Google Family Group and use the Google Wallet app, according to Google’s support documentation.

Once set up, the family manager can add money, set or change a daily limit, review transaction history and receive notifications of transactions and changes to balance controls. They can remotely lock or unlock the balance, remove it from a device, close it and receive any remaining funds. A second parent in the Family Group can fund the balance, set daily limits and monitor activity, but does not have all of the family manager’s permissions.

Children can see their available balance, their transaction history and any daily limit. Google says they receive notices when money is added, limits or locks are changed, or a purchase is declined because of insufficient funds or a spending limit.

Where can a child spend a Google Wallet balance?

The balance is for tap-to-pay purchases in physical stores only. It cannot be used for online checkout, payments across Google services or cash withdrawals, Google says. Individual transactions also cannot be routed to a parent for advance approval.

The balance feature is available only in the US. That is narrower than Google Wallet for kids generally, which Google lists as supported in a wider group of countries. Google said scheduled recurring transfers are planned but are not yet available.

How is the new balance different from adding a child’s card?

Google already allows a parent to help add an eligible card held by, or authorized for, a child to the child’s Wallet. That process requires parental approval and assistance. However, Google says neither Family Link nor Google Wallet provides spending controls for those payment cards; any such controls would depend on the card issuer.

The new supervised balance instead has Google-managed daily limits and remote locks. Google’s support page identifies the payment instrument as the Google Pay Balance Prepaid Visa Card, issued by Pathward, N.A., Member FDIC, under a Visa licence. The card has no ATM or cash access and is valid only in the US.

If a child removes Google Account supervision, the balance closes and residual funds return to the family manager, Google says. A user who reaches 18 may keep using the balance if Wallet supervision remains in place.
