Kroger and Instacart add prescription delivery to grocery orders

Kroger Instacart prescription delivery now allows customers to place a single order for groceries and eligible medicines through Kroger’s websites and apps. The service extends the companies’ delivery partnership into pharmacy purchases, while keeping eligibility and local regulatory limits central to whether an order can be fulfilled.

Kroger pharmacy teams fill and verify eligible prescriptions, then place them in tamper-resistant packaging, according to the company’s launch announcement reported by PYMNTS. An Instacart shopper collects the combined order from a local store and takes it to the customer’s address.

Customers can select either a direct handoff or delivery at the door, PYMNTS reported. The service combines the grocery and prescription portions only when the medication and delivery meet the relevant requirements.

How does Kroger Instacart prescription delivery work?

Customers use Kroger’s digital channels rather than a separate ordering platform. They must be enrolled in Kroger’s My Prescriptions program and Online Pay before arranging a combined delivery, according to the Indianapolis Star and Food & Beverage Magazine.

A customer can add groceries to a prescription order, or add an eligible prescription to a grocery order, Food & Beverage Magazine reported. Instacart provides order tracking and performs the last-mile delivery for combined orders.

The service does not mean every prescription can be sent in a grocery delivery. Eligibility can depend on medication type, the delivery address, local rules, age requirements and other exclusions, according to the Indianapolis Star and Food & Beverage Magazine. Customers therefore need to confirm that a particular prescription qualifies when ordering.

Where is the combined service available?

Reports differ on the precise footprint. PYMNTS, citing Kroger, identified Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Harris Teeter among the banners offering the option. The Indianapolis Star reported that the program applies at Kroger stores with pharmacies, while noting that local rules can affect availability. Those accounts do not establish a single nationwide store count.

Harris Teeter, a Kroger subsidiary, officially introduced its bundled service on Aug. 3, Progressive Grocer reported. Kroger Health President Colleen Lindholz said the company views the offering as a way to combine delivery convenience with its pharmacy teams’ service.

Is a Boost membership required?

The available reports do not say that Boost by Kroger Plus membership is required to use a combined order. PYMNTS reported that members receive free grocery and prescription delivery on eligible orders, alongside discounts, 2x Points and streaming options. The eligibility qualifier still applies to the delivery benefit.

The launch builds on the companies’ earlier delivery work. Instacart announced in June 2025 that it was powering Kroger Express Delivery, which offered delivery in as little as 30 minutes, according to PYMNTS. The new option adds eligible pharmacy items to that broader digital ordering relationship.
