MoonPay PayBox opens AI payments through Claude and ChatGPT
MoonPay says PayBox lets AI agents prepare payments, swaps and bookings while users approve money movement with passkeys.

MoonPay PayBox AI payments are now available through custom connectors for Claude and ChatGPT, the fintech company said, giving users a way to let AI agents prepare transactions across digital assets and online commerce. MoonPay said the service keeps final control with the user through passkey approvals and permission settings.
The company described PayBox as a payment vault designed for AI agents. Users can ask an assistant in natural language to carry out tasks such as onramping into PYUSD, swapping PYUSD into SOL, bridging assets to Robinhood Chain, using Aave, booking travel or making a restaurant reservation. According to MoonPay, the AI prepares the action and the user authorises it before funds move.
What is MoonPay PayBox?
PayBox is MoonPay’s vault for storing payment credentials and wallet access so an AI assistant can initiate transactions without taking custody of a user’s funds, according to the company. It is intended to connect conversational AI tools with card payments, crypto wallets, decentralised finance and online merchants through a single permission layer.
MoonPay said the product is built for Claude and ChatGPT at launch through custom connectors. The company added that support for additional AI platforms is planned.
How the transaction controls work
PayBox uses two approval models set by the user. Under “Always Ask,” each transaction needs passkey confirmation. Under “Autonomous,” the AI can act only within limits chosen by the user, MoonPay said.
The company said changes to permissions require a fresh passkey approval by a human user. Each authorisation is limited to a specific action, cannot be reused and can be revoked.
MoonPay said PayBox can store cards so an AI agent may pay without seeing card details. Card transactions run through Visa’s agentic commerce protocol, according to MoonPay, which the company said reduces exposure of raw card numbers.
For wallets, MoonPay said PayBox protects keys using multi-party computation and trusted execution environments. In that structure, private-key material is split across hardware-isolated systems, so MoonPay says no single party, including MoonPay or the AI agent, can access the full key or sign a transaction alone.
Which chains and services does PayBox support?
MoonPay said PayBox launches with Solana and EVM-compatible networks, including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon. The company said more networks will be added.
The service also uses x402, an open standard for agent-initiated payments, according to MoonPay. The company said early integrations are live for restaurant reservations, travel bookings and shopping with major online retailers, with additional integrations planned.
MoonPay said PayBox draws on key-management infrastructure from Sodot, a company it acquired earlier this year. According to MoonPay, that infrastructure secures more than $50 billion in assets and more than 10 million wallets for crypto companies. MoonPay said the technology is being combined with its platform serving more than 1,700 enterprise clients.
Ivan Soto-Wright, MoonPay’s founder and chief executive, said in the announcement that AI agents will need ways to hold, move and spend money safely, calling PayBox the company’s “trust layer” for that use case.
MoonPay said it plans to expand PayBox further into decentralised finance, including routing swaps, trading perpetual futures, managing liquidity and acting on market opportunities within user-defined approval rules.
