PayPal Credit Card special financing is now available on purchases of $149 or more wherever Mastercard is accepted, including in stores and online, according to PayPal’s product materials and an Aug. 10 report by PYMNTS. The six-month offer expands the financing feature beyond purchases made through PayPal checkout, though cardholders must pay the promotional balance in full within the period to avoid interest charged from the purchase date.
PayPal says minimum monthly payments are required and both the card and its related digital credit line are subject to credit approval. The company presents the six-month financing feature as an ongoing offer rather than an introductory promotion.
The change concerns the financing terms attached to the physical PayPal Credit Card, rather than the card’s initial expansion into physical commerce. PayPal and Synchrony announced on June 3, 2025 that the new physical card, issued by Synchrony, would allow PayPal Credit to be used in stores and anywhere Mastercard is accepted.
How does PayPal Credit Card special financing work?
For eligible purchases of at least $149, PayPal says cardholders receive six months of special financing. Interest will be charged to the account from the purchase date if the full balance is not paid within six months. The terms therefore require repayment of the entire promotional purchase balance by the deadline, as well as the required minimum monthly payments, to avoid that interest charge.
Synchrony Bank issues both the PayPal Credit Card and the PayPal Credit digital line. The card is issued pursuant to a Mastercard license, PayPal says. The product is separate from the PayPal Cashback Mastercard and PayPal’s buy now, pay later offerings, which carry different features and terms.
What is the difference between the card and PayPal Credit digital line?
- PayPal Credit Card: Can be used online and in person wherever Mastercard is accepted, as well as with merchants offering PayPal checkout. It carries the $149-plus special-financing offer across that acceptance network.
- PayPal Credit digital line: Can be used when a shopper checks out with PayPal. PayPal says it has the same $149-plus special-financing offer within that PayPal checkout setting.
Applicants cannot select which version they receive. PayPal says approval decisions assign either the card or the digital line based on an applicant’s credit history. Both are available to U.S. customers who are of legal age in their state of residence, subject to credit approval.
A declined application does not affect an applicant’s credit score, according to PayPal. An approved application, however, results in a hard credit inquiry that may affect the score. The physical card can also be added to mobile wallets for tap-to-pay, Synchrony said in its 2025 announcement.
PYMNTS reported that PayPal described the expanded financing as manageable through the PayPal app. For consumers, the practical effect is that qualifying purchases made through Mastercard acceptance can receive the same six-month financing treatment previously associated with PayPal checkout, subject to the product’s repayment conditions.
