Varo Kroger cash deposits are now available through a pilot at more than 2,000 participating Kroger Family of Stores locations, according to an August 5 announcement from Varo Bank. The service lets customers add cash to a Varo account without the stated $4.95 retail service fee by presenting a barcode from the bank’s app at a checkout lane or customer-service desk.

The companies describe the programme as a four-week pilot ending on August 18, 2026. That qualification is significant: although the announcement uses nationwide language, it establishes availability only at participating locations and does not confirm that the feature will remain after the pilot ends.

Varo said Green Dot’s embedded-finance platform and money-processing network power the service. Green Dot’s role and the scope of the arrangement are described in the companies’ announcement, rather than independently verified by the distributors that carried it.

How do Varo customers make cash deposits at Kroger?

A customer generates a unique barcode in the Varo app, shows it to a cashier and provides the cash to be deposited. The cashier scans the barcode, which the announcement says directs the cash-add transaction into the customer’s Varo account.

The barcode route is the part of the pilot described as fee-free. Varo’s announcement says it avoids a $4.95 retail service fee. It also draws a distinction with conventional cash loads made by swiping a debit card: those transactions will continue to carry the standard fee.

The service is available at participating checkout and customer-service locations, according to Varo. The announcement does not provide details on transaction limits, how quickly funds are posted, whether a purchase is necessary or which individual store banners take part. Customers therefore cannot assume that every Kroger Family location offers the service.

What does the pilot mean for Varo customers?

The arrangement gives customers who hold physical cash another retail point at which to place money into a digital bank account. It does not change the basic account relationship: cash is handed to a store cashier, while the barcode connects that transaction with the customer’s Varo account.

Varo and Green Dot had previously expanded a similar no-fee cash-deposit option to more than 7,500 participating CVS Pharmacy locations in December 2024, according to a Green Dot post. The earlier CVS terms should not be read across to the Kroger test, since the current announcement gives no Kroger-specific deposit limits or other operating conditions.

Gavin Michael, Varo’s chief executive, said the aim was to allow customers to handle deposits where they shop. Renata Caine, Green Dot’s senior vice-president and general manager for embedded finance, said the company’s money-processing technology was being used to bring the cash-add function to checkout lanes. Those comments reflect the companies’ stated rationale for the pilot.
