The Wero Luxembourg launch September timetable has been set for 1 September 2026, moving the digital wallet’s official market debut beyond the earlier targets communicated by participating banks. The European Payments Initiative, which operates Wero, said the date is intended to support customer awareness, coordinated communications and visibility after the summer holiday period, according to the Luxembourg Times.

The revised date also begins a short transition before the planned withdrawal of Payconiq, Luxembourg’s existing mobile-payment app, from 30 September. The Luxembourg Times reported that both services are expected to remain available during the changeover, while merchants have until the end of September to replace Payconiq QR codes with Wero-branded versions.

When will Wero launch in Luxembourg?

EPI has designated 1 September as Wero’s official Luxembourg market-launch date. That date does not necessarily determine the availability date at every bank: EPI told the Luxembourg Times that institutions would continue with their own deployment plans, meaning some could potentially introduce the service before the official launch and others on that date.

The original timetable has been reported differently. The Luxembourg Times said BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, Raiffeisen and Spuerkeess stated in March that they expected to be ready for customers by the end of June, with Post Luxembourg expected from mid-August at the earliest. Finextra described the official date as having moved from 1 July, while also reporting that the app had initially been planned for launch in June.

Neither account establishes a single previous industry-wide go-live date. What is confirmed is that EPI now identifies 1 September as the official market launch.

Why did EPI change the date?

EPI told the Luxembourg Times that it selected the new timing to avoid a period when holidays can reduce media attention, customer engagement and market visibility. It said introducing a new payment brand requires coordinated communications and consumer awareness as well as technical readiness.

Ralf Hamal, EPI’s country relationship management lead for Belgium and Luxembourg, told Finextra that the change would allow alignment among the country’s payment infrastructure participants, extending beyond banks. He also cited further testing of the payment uses planned for the app.

What will change for Payconiq users and merchants?

Wero is a digital wallet run by EPI, a consortium of European banks. According to the Luxembourg Times and Finextra, it is intended to support person-to-person transfers, invoice payments, in-store QR-code payments and online purchases directly from a bank account.

Payconiq users will need to register for Wero before Payconiq is withdrawn from the Luxembourg market from 30 September, the Luxembourg Times reported. During the transition, users can keep using Payconiq while setting up Wero, and merchants can update their QR codes by the end-of-September deadline.

The schedule places the official launch and Payconiq transition in September, while EPI has cited participant alignment and additional testing as reasons for the revised date.
