Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday evening, in what multiple outlets describe as their first private, face-to-face meeting. The Anthropic CEO Amodei Trump meeting is planned after months of disagreement between the company and the administration over artificial-intelligence policy and federal dealings with Anthropic.

CNBC, Bloomberg, Politico and The Wall Street Journal each reported the planned dinner, citing people familiar with the arrangements. The subject of the discussion has not been disclosed, Bloomberg reported.

CNBC said Amodei did not attend Thursday's White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping because of a scheduling conflict. Citing a person familiar with the details, CNBC reported that Trump subsequently invited Amodei to the private dinner.

Why are Amodei and Trump meeting?

The dinner will bring together two figures who have taken different positions on development and oversight of advanced AI. CNBC reported that Amodei has urged companies to slow the development of the most advanced models, address potential risks and accept additional government oversight.

Trump has criticised AI “guardrails” and Amodei's position in a Truth Social post cited by CNBC. A White House official said in a statement to CNBC that the president wants the United States to lead the world in “Super Intelligence” while protecting consumers, encouraging innovation and strengthening American competitiveness.

The administration's relationship with Anthropic has also been affected by a dispute involving the Pentagon. Politico reported that the department had designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company sought to restrict how the Defense Department could use its Claude model, and that Anthropic sued the administration.

On Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled for the administration, permitting it to continue excluding Anthropic from Pentagon contracts, Politico reported. The outlet said that a federal judge in California had ruled for Anthropic a month earlier in a separate challenge under another military procurement law.

The planned White House dinner does not establish that those disputes have been resolved. Anthropic did not immediately respond to Politico's request for comment, and no agenda, policy decision or agreement has been announced.

What happened at the Xi Jinping state dinner?

Amodei was absent from the White House event for Xi, while several prominent technology executives attended, CNBC reported. The outlet said the absence resulted from a scheduling conflict, rather than an indication that the chief executive had been excluded. Sunday's planned dinner is separate from the state occasion and was still scheduled at the time of the reports.
