DoorDash has added instant deposit capability to DoorDash Crimson, its banking product for delivery drivers, through Astra’s Payment Cloud, Astra said in a Wednesday press release. The feature allows drivers to move money from external accounts in real time using Visa Direct and Mastercard Send, expanding the financial tools available to workers on the delivery platform.
The integration gives DoorDash Crimson access to Astra’s payments infrastructure through a single application programming interface, according to Astra. The company said its Payment Cloud handles real-time money movement for businesses and combines payment execution, workflow automation, card authorization optimization, risk controls and automated treasury functions.
For drivers, the practical effect is faster access to funds transferred into DoorDash Crimson from accounts held elsewhere. Visa Direct and Mastercard Send are card-network services used by businesses and financial platforms to push money quickly to eligible cards and accounts, rather than relying only on slower bank-transfer processes.
Nancy Yang, director of strategy and operations at DoorDash, said in Astra’s release that the company selected Astra because its architecture combines instant payments and automated treasury capabilities in one system. Yang said the integration process and performance gave DoorDash confidence it could support Crimson at scale.
Astra CEO Gil Akos said in the release that the company’s infrastructure is intended to support businesses that handle high transfer volumes. He said Astra built Payment Cloud to make real-time money movement dependable for teams creating financial products.
Instant payment demand among gig workers
The rollout comes as instant disbursement has become a more visible competitive feature across gig, creator and marketplace platforms. A PYMNTS Intelligence report, “Banking Both Sides: Instant Payouts Turn Receivers Into Customers,” found that workers consider instant deposit availability when choosing among gig platforms and employers.
According to that report, 31% of gig workers said receiving disbursements instantly is urgent. The report also said gig, creator and marketplace platforms are among the most active adopters of instant payouts by volume, with nearly one-third of senders offering instant payouts always or most of the time.
PYMNTS Intelligence said the shift toward instant disbursement is being driven by recipient demand, faster sender adoption and payment rails that are already available. That dynamic has made payout speed a product feature for platforms that rely on flexible workers and high-frequency payments.
Astra investment
Astra said in a February blog post that it had received a $10 million strategic investment from Nyca Partners to expand Payment Cloud. Akos said in that post that instant payment capability had become a customer-retention issue for companies offering financial products.
The DoorDash integration places Astra’s infrastructure inside a worker-facing financial product tied to one of the largest U.S. delivery platforms. Astra did not disclose financial terms of the DoorDash arrangement in its release.
