World Foundation raised $52.5 million to expand World ID technology for organizations, consumers and artificial intelligence agents, the nonprofit said in a Friday press release. The World Foundation funding came through sales of WLD tokens to strategic investors, with the tokens subject to a one-year lockup.

The first close was led by Pantera Capital, according to the release. The financing adds capital for World ID infrastructure at a time when the foundation says AI is increasing the need to distinguish verified humans from automated systems online.

World Foundation describes itself as the independent nonprofit steward of the World protocol. Its stated goals are to shift the protocol toward an open, decentralized model, broaden community participation and make the system economically self-sustaining through fees paid by applications using the protocol.

What is World ID?

World ID is a verification system designed to let a person prove they are a unique human without disclosing their identity, according to World Foundation. Tools for Humanity uses a device called an Orb to capture images of a person’s face and eyes, convert those images into a numerical string stored on the person’s device, and allow the person to use a World ID as proof of being human.

The foundation said more than 18 million people have been verified through the technology. It also said more than 475 million World ID proofs have been used, and that World ID is being integrated with communications, identity, authentication and dating platforms.

Cosmo Jiang, general partner at Pantera Capital, said in the release that demand for “Proof of Human” is becoming clearer as AI development accelerates, citing enterprise interest. “We’re excited to continue supporting World’s mission at this inflection point in its growth,” Jiang said.

The token sale structure gives investors exposure to WLD while restricting resale for one year. A lockup typically limits near-term token circulation by preventing participants from selling during the restricted period, although the release did not disclose individual investor allocations or further pricing terms.

How does World ID relate to AI agents?

World and Coinbase announced in March that they had worked together on a solution for the agentic web, aimed at showing that an AI agent has a verified human behind it. Their AgentKit beta developer toolkit allows verified humans to delegate their World ID to AI agents, giving those agents an added trust layer for online interactions and transactions.

PYMNTS reported in February that Tools for Humanity was working with well-known brands to promote World ID. The new funding gives World Foundation additional resources as it seeks wider adoption of a protocol built around human verification, application fees and participation by external developers and platforms.
