The Jeffries-Kushner meeting, a private encounter in Manhattan between the House Democratic leader and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, has brought fresh attention to the political stakes of November’s midterm elections. A person familiar with the discussion confirmed to NBC News that Hakeem Jeffries and Jared Kushner recently met to explore possible areas of cooperation, although the person did not disclose the timing or subjects of the conversation.

The New York Times first reported the meeting. CNBC also confirmed it through a person familiar with the matter, who spoke anonymously because of its sensitivity. The White House did not immediately comment to CNBC, while NBC News said neither the White House nor Jeffries’s office immediately responded to its requests for comment.

Jeffries did not directly address the meeting in a statement to CNBC. He said that, in conversations with the Trump administration, Democrats would stress that the affordability crisis requires “transformational policy change.” He also said House Democrats would oppose what he called an extremist approach and asked whether Republicans would join Democrats in pursuing an affordable America.

What was discussed at the Jeffries-Kushner meeting?

The specific agenda was not independently disclosed by NBC News’ source. The New York Times reported that the two men discussed housing, immigration and the high cost of living as possible common-ground issues. CNBC and the Associated Press, in reporting that attributed those details to the Times, also said Kushner suggested that Jeffries meet White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. CNBC said its person familiar with the meeting confirmed that Kushner made that suggestion.

The reported contact did not establish a policy agreement, a commitment to legislation or a formal negotiation between Jeffries and the administration. Kushner’s present role has been described differently across reports. CNBC said he holds no government post and has acted as an outside adviser and negotiator; NBC News described him as an informal adviser and special envoy. Speaker Mike Johnson said on Fox News that Kushner was not directly involved in the administration’s day-to-day White House work, according to The Hill and the Associated Press.

Jeffries and Kushner have worked across party lines before. NBC News reported that Kushner championed the First Step Act criminal-justice legislation during Trump’s first term, with Jeffries serving as a co-sponsor. The measure became law in 2018.

Why does the meeting matter before the midterms?

The meeting came as Democrats seek to regain the House in November. NBC News said Jeffries would be the favorite to become speaker should Democrats win the chamber. A change in House control could place the chamber’s agenda and oversight powers under Democratic leadership, including scrutiny of the Trump administration, as NBC and the Associated Press have reported.

Johnson said he did not know what the meeting concerned and voiced confidence that Republicans would retain their narrow House majority. He also described Kushner as someone who would “hedge his bets,” according to CNBC. The available reporting confirms a private meeting and outlines subjects reported by the Times, but it does not show that either side reached an agreement or changed its election strategy.
