Cinven La Caisse Optio deal activity moved ahead after the two investors agreed to jointly acquire Optio Group, a UK-headquartered specialty insurance managing general agent, from Preservation Capital Partners, according to PE Hub. The transaction value was not disclosed, and completion remains subject to regulatory approvals and other standard closing requirements.
Optio operates in a segment of insurance where specialist underwriting capability is used to assess and place complex risks. PE Hub reported that the company originates, underwrites and manages specialty risk for more than 60 third-party capacity providers, across six business lines and more than 30 products.
The deal adds another insurance-related asset to Cinven’s financial services portfolio. PE Hub said the transaction follows Cinven’s previous investments in Compre, Miller and Policy Expert, businesses tied to specialty underwriting and wider financial services markets.
For La Caisse, the purchase is aligned with an existing emphasis on insurance and insurance-linked platforms in Europe, North America and Australia, according to PE Hub. The Canadian investor is partnering with Cinven after both firms had followed Optio for more than two years, with Cinven’s team also developing a relationship with Optio’s management over that period.
What does Optio Group do?
Optio is a managing general agent, a type of insurance platform that underwrites policies and manages risk on behalf of insurers or other capacity providers rather than using only its own balance sheet. In Optio’s case, PE Hub reported that it works with more than 60 third-party capacity providers.
The company’s six business lines cover profession and specialty; transportation, property and energy; healthcare; transactional liability; surety; and credit. Its product set spans more than 30 areas, giving the business a broad position in specialty insurance markets.
Optio has a European base and a wider international footprint. PE Hub reported that the company operates from 18 offices in 15 countries, spanning the UK, continental Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia.
Why are Cinven and La Caisse buying Optio?
The investors are targeting a specialty insurance platform with scale across multiple underwriting categories and geographies. Martin Longchamps, executive vice-president and head of private equity and private credit at La Caisse, said in a statement cited by PE Hub that technical underwriting, risk selection and scale are increasingly relevant in specialty insurance.
Longchamps said Optio has a differentiated platform serving complex insurance markets, a strong European base and potential for international growth. He also said La Caisse’s investment reflects its view of the sector’s long-term fundamentals and its experience across the insurance value chain.
No timetable for closing was disclosed. The transaction will proceed only if the required regulatory reviews and other closing conditions are satisfied, according to PE Hub.
