IK Partners has announced plans to establish an office in Madrid, adding a Spanish base to support its activity in the region. The firm also said Gonzalo Fernandez-Albiñana will join as a partner on September 1.

Fernandez-Albiñana is joining IK Partners from Ardian, according to the announcement. IK Partners said the Madrid office will extend the firm’s existing work in the region.

The firm also said Alejo Lopez-Balcells, an associate director in IK’s Mid Cap Investment team, will move to Madrid. His relocation gives the new office an internal link to IK’s mid-cap investment platform as it builds local coverage.

A local office can give an investment manager a permanent base for sourcing opportunities, meeting management teams and working with advisers and portfolio companies. For private capital firms, proximity to founders, executives and intermediaries often forms part of the operating model, particularly in mid-market transactions where relationships and sector knowledge can shape deal access.

IK Partners did not disclose additional details on staffing, investment targets or the planned opening timetable beyond the September 1 partner appointment. The announcement places the firm’s Spanish expansion within its broader regional experience rather than describing a new strategy.
